OrientedDis.. Disoriented. |
Thursday, July 04, 2002 orientation - finally! - just a slice of it all It's not good to write about things when they become slightly burdensome, in my mind, to write about.. but, I'll give it a shot. There's so much I could write about, and I only want to say it all in a few words. I flew to orientation alone - I decided my parents shouldn't have to pay the $150 per peson fee for my orientation. It was a little awkward being one of the few students on the campus for orientation (or so it seemed) without my parents, but it was ok because the parents and students hardly ever saw each other throughout everything. I met a guy - a junior - on the shuttle ride to the campus, ironicially he was just coming back from a trip and heading back to the campus for his summer class sessions - coming back on the same day the mad rush of new students (me included) were arriving for the first day of orientation. Shortly after he got on the shuttle, another girl (I'll call her "L") hopped on as well.. headed to the same place. This guy was extremely helpful as he told us the "lowdown"/everything we should know about Pepperdine.. what to watch for.. pointed out the cheap/nice places to eat around the campus on the way there. It was a long drive.. probably an hour and a half at least. L was extremely nice the moment I met her. We checked-in together (and we happened to be staying in the same suite building), and from thereon I often saw her throughout the orientation days. Her mom was adorable. After leaving L and heading up to my separate suite-area, I met my roomate shortly after that. At first sight of my roomate I thought we wouldn't get along. She appeared to be punk-rockish/party-goer-type? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being around people who like to have fun, but she seemed like the cold/unfriendly type. To my surprise though, (I'll call her "R"), R and I get along wonderfully. I can get vibes after meeting certain people. I just can feel whether or not they're the type of person I'm comfortable around, and R.. wow.. I don't know.. it's like I have known her forever. We hung out together a ton during orientation, and it's like we can just talk about anything, already, with each other. I feel like, already, she's one of my best friends on campus. We have so much in common.. and, I just get great buddy-vibes from her. I met a ton of people throughout orientation, many of whom I think I will become great friends with during my actual time in college, but I didn't feel nearly close/comfortable around anyone as I did with R. I'm so lucky to have her as my roomate because I don't think I could have got anyone better. She's a night owl like me, but not an insomniac-type... we still like our sleep.. lol.. as we proved by hitting the "sleep" button on my alarm clock 2 times before we woke up.. she would mumble something like.. "ugh, pull the shades".. and me in my half-asleep-state would pull the shades and we'd both just sack out again.. ahha... it's so crazy.. I can't really explain, but everything felt as if I'd known her for years and everything was just natual between us. I also like how she's the type to lookout for me.. or keep me on track. I'm horrible about time, but she's good at waking me up just-in-time for that "lecture session thing" we had to be at (though we were always running to the "sessions" late together.. ahha.. I can already tell some things which are going to be 'routine' for us).. and when we were registering, she came by my table and wanted to know if I wanted to go to dinner, informed me that I had 15 minutes until we missed it... heh.. and that's good because I cannot miss dinner or I'll get pissed if I don't have food in my stomach, ahha... so I decided to just mad-rush fill out my schedule and she really helped me get that done as she looked up in the booklet all of the classrooms I had to write down which I forgot to do, and I filled out everything else in the meantime. We arrived to dinner about 3 minutes late, heehee.. but what we ended up doing instead was hilarious.. I mean.. it's something typical that I would do, and she totally went along with it as if it's something she would typically do too. We raided the "parent's dinner" which was about to be put-away also, but the student's dinner was completely gone already.. ahha.. so we ran to the caterer's screaming.. "wait! wait! don't put that away! can we pleeeeeease have those leftovers?".. I can't explain, but we were cracking up because we must've looked like pigs who didn't get enough the first-time-around for the students' dinner, heh, but unfortunately we didn't get the "student's dinner" obviously. I could go on forever about my roomate, but, this is already so long so I'll stop. Well, one last thing. She wanted to switch suites because of our other 'suitemates' - one being an opera singer and another being kind of weird/loud - and so we did switch suites.. to the top of the mountain practically. :( I'm kind of regretting that we moved waaay further up in the suite buildings, but it might be nicer too. She said the people in the suite which we've switched to now are really nice (but I haven't met them), and we got some "inside information" from someone in housing that they're building a volleyball court near our suite. :) And some other girls (upperclassmen) told us the area which we've moved to usually is really fun and that they have a lot of barbecues and stuff. Hopefully it all turns out to be great, I'm sure it will. NOW... about my schedule. It is really.. really.. nice.. I think. I pretty-much got a "dream schedule" which other upperclassmen informed us wouldn't happen. My freshman advisor is awesome. Awesome awesome awesome (not to sound like a valley-girl-cheerleader, heh, but he simply is awesome). I don't want to go into all about him though because, say someone in/from Pepperdine stumbled upon this journal, I wouldn't want anything changed because of things I said. Anyway. My advisor got me all of the classes I requested for. Heh, it's a crazy-mad-rush for the computers in the morning.. whoever gets signed-up by their advisors first for the classes.. they're the ones who get the classes they wanted. Thankfully my advisor cared enough (I think) to be the first at the computers and I got several classes which only had 5 openings left (and we're talking a possible 245-more?) students all trying to get the same classes). They said morning classes couldn't be avoided as a freshman, and that "Friday classes will happen.. deal with it" Weeeell.. I managed to sign up for an insane 17 credit hours (they say that's a lot?.. but it doesn't seem like it when I look at my schedule..) I'm not going to say which classes I'm taking (you never know about stalkers these days ;P) but this is my overall schedule: Monday: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Class 1 7:30-8:45 p.m. Class 2 Tuesday 4:00-5:30 p.m. Class 3 6:00-9:50 p.m. Class 4 Wednesday: 11 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Class 5 7:30-8:45 p.m. Class 2 Thursday: 2-4:00 p.m. Class 2 4-5:30 p.m. Class 1 Friday: NO CLASS! :) --- Essentially that means: I have only 2 classes per day. My only "early class" ever is on wednesday at 11 a.m... every other class throughout the week never starts any earlier than 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. .... and no classes on friday, obviously. :) Woo! Dream schedule. My night classes really aren't that bad either. My only "late" class (tille about 10 p.m.) is only once a week anyway. Well, that's all for now. I could write so much about everything, but I'll save some of the slightly-more-interesting things about the actual campus & people later - things being different from what I expected.. whether that's a good or bad thing?..I'm not sure yet. . . . babbled Lin |
